Toronto Pearson (YYZ) to Rome Fiumicino (FCO) is an overnight transatlantic flight of roughly eight and a half hours, and as of July 2026 three airlines have competed on it nonstop — genuine depth for a Canada–Italy route, and useful leverage when you compare itineraries. Every nonstop leaves Toronto between late afternoon and late evening and puts you in Rome the next morning or midday, so this is a route that rewards planning around a jet-lagged first day. With Rome's Holy Year over as of January 6, 2026, visitor patterns are settling back toward the city's normal seasonal cycle.
Airlines on this route
As of July 2026, three airlines have sold nonstop Toronto–Rome seats — Air Canada, ITA Airways, and Air Transat — and schedule data for the month showed roughly 27 weekly nonstop flights, though that count includes one technical-stop operation that carries no Toronto–Rome passengers (see the FAQ). All the nonstops are overnight flights: departures from Toronto have run between late afternoon and late evening (roughly 17:00 to 21:40), arriving in Rome between early morning and midday the next day, with eastbound times of about 8h20 to 8h35. One alliance note for points collectors and one-stop shoppers: ITA Airways joined Star Alliance on April 1, 2026 and adopted Lufthansa's Miles & More program, so Air Canada and ITA now sit in the same alliance — relevant to Aeroplan earning and to connecting itineraries through Lufthansa Group hubs.

When to go
Rome has a Mediterranean climate: July and August daytime highs typically sit around 31°C and spike to 34–37°C in most years, while winters are mild and the year's roughly 750 mm of rain falls mostly in autumn — November is historically the wettest month, at about 108 mm. Climate guides recommend mid-April to mid-June and September to early October as the comfortable windows, ahead of the autumn rains; July and August combine peak heat with the heaviest tourist influx. Nonstop capacity from Toronto follows the same curve — Air Transat's service is spring–fall seasonal and ITA has historically gone daily only June through September — so shoulder-season travelers typically see fewer nonstop frequencies per week. One 2026-specific note: the Catholic Jubilee that drew an estimated 33.5 million pilgrims from 185 countries ended on January 6, 2026, so that exceptional crowd surge is behind the city.
Arrival and practicalities
The rail station sits inside the airport, close to the terminals. The Leonardo Express runs nonstop to Roma Termini in 32 minutes, departing every 15 minutes (from the airport roughly 05:38–23:27), with a posted one-way fare of €14 as of mid-2026. The cheaper FL1 regional line serves Roma Tiburtina and other city stations — but not Termini directly — every 15 minutes on working days and every 30 minutes on weekends and holidays.
Coach operators — SIT Bus Shuttle, Terravision, T.A.M., Schiaffini's Rome Airport Bus, and COTRAL — run between the Terminal 3 bus hub and Roma Termini, with a combined timetable spanning roughly 00:15 to 23:55, including after-midnight departures. That makes the bus the practical fallback if your flight lands after the last train.
Fiumicino handled a record 51.3 million passengers in 2025 — its first year over 50 million — yet it rates unusually well for an airport that size: it took ACI Europe's award for airports handling over 40 million passengers for the fifth consecutive year in 2026 (its eighth since 2018), has held ACI World's Airport Service Quality award for European airports for nine straight years (2017–2025), and carries a Skytrax 5-Star rating (2022 and 2025). A multi-billion-euro expansion (reported at roughly €9 billion overall, about €2 billion of it by 2027) is underway toward a 100-million-passenger target, so expect some construction alongside the new capacity.
Every nonstop is a red-eye, but arrival times vary more than you might expect: ITA has landed as early as about 07:35, Air Canada from roughly 09:00 depending on date, and Air Transat's TS308 around 12:15. An early arrival means hours to fill before hotel check-in, so plan a slow, outdoor first day. Returns are gentler: westbound flights have departed Rome mid-morning and landed in Toronto the same afternoon (ITA's published schedule shows 10:15 out of FCO, 14:05 into YYZ), though westbound flight times run longer than eastbound — around 9h50 versus 8h35 on ITA's timetable.
Questions travelers ask
- Do Canadians need a visa for Italy?
- No — per the Government of Canada page updated July 13, 2026, Canadian citizens can visit for tourism for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area without a visa. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the date you expect to leave the Schengen area. Entry rules change, so check travel.gc.ca close to departure.
- What is ETIAS, and do I need it yet?
- ETIAS is the EU's upcoming online travel authorization. The Government of Canada says Canadians will need to apply and pay for one beginning in Q4 2026, with the authorization valid for three years or until your passport expires. The European Commission set the fee at €20 in a July 2025 revision, and full mandatory enforcement is expected around April 2027 — but these dates have moved before. Apply only through the official EU website; copycat sites exist.
- Will my passport get stamped in Rome?
- Not anymore. The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) became fully operational on April 10, 2026 and replaced passport stamping at Schengen's external borders. Flying nonstop from Toronto, you are registered digitally at Fiumicino (biometrics plus an entry record), which also satisfies Italy's presence requirement. If you connect through another Schengen airport — Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris and the like — you cross the external border there instead, and for stays under 90 days Italy expects a 'declaration of presence' filed at a local police office within eight days of arriving.
- Why do flight trackers show Biman Bangladesh or Ethiopian Airlines on Toronto–Rome?
- Both airlines have routed long-haul Toronto services through Rome as a technical (refueling) stop: Biman's three-times-weekly Dhaka–Toronto 787-9 has stopped in Rome since late March 2025, and Ethiopian's Addis Ababa–Toronto A350 also appears on trackers. Neither sells the Toronto–Rome segment on its own — Ethiopian lacks the traffic rights, and Biman passengers stay on board during the Rome stop. If a listing presents either as a Toronto–Rome flight, treat it as a data error.
- What's the time difference between Toronto and Rome?
- Rome is six hours ahead of Toronto in both summer and winter. The gap briefly narrows to five hours twice a year because Europe and North America change their clocks on different dates: from the second Sunday of March to the last Sunday of March (March 8–29 in 2026), and again from the EU changeover in late October to the North American changeover on the first Sunday of November.
